I am so deeply honored to be invited to participate in the MENTOR: 40 Photographers / 40 Years exhibition at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art this summer. To be one of 40 people selected from the Maine Media Workshops incredible history fills my heart with pride and joy. Thanks for Brenton Hamilton and Bruce Brown, I’ll get to be surrounded by the work of some of my dearest friends, as well as greatest heros. Plus, I can actually attend the reception! If you are up in Maine at the end of the summer, check it out! I’ll post up some photographs of the exhibition later on.

Bonds, one of the large-scale works featured in the exhibition. Passage (seen above) will also be there.

Well, yet another SPE conference has came and went. It is always a little bit sad when it’s over, but it was a good one and I’m glad to have such a great community to attach myself to. As always, at least we have our dance party photobooth pics to remember the occasion.

Louisiana Purchase Exhibition

I’m so pleased to be showing a photograph (Laura and Donkey, seen above) at the second annual Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, juried by Dr. Paul Manoguerra. The brainchild of the amazing Jes Schrom, my former colleague, this show has special importance because I installed the original exhibition two years ago. It is a nice little full-circle homecoming. Thanks Jes for the hard work and to Joey and the Grads for the installation… I know it is a tough job!

Each of us has such different perspectives on photographing landscapes, from traditional to analytical to downright playful! Thanks Brad Cushman for making this happen!

Make8elieve Magazine – Issue #2, Levitation

Make8elieve strikes again! Michelle Marie Murphy (Ohio) and Baptiste Lefebvre (a.k.a. Cetusss) (Switzerland) have amped it up with their second issue. The range of artists and works are just great, and it is quickly becoming my favorite semi-annual journal of art. I have the greatest respect for Michelle and Baptiste and can’t wait to see more.

Big News

The dust has settled on this news around here, but I’m ready to announce to the rest of you that I’ve accepted a new job at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)! The thought of leaving all of my dear friends here is really difficult, but I’m comforted by the chance for new opportunities, to live in a new city, and to work with my old pal, Nate Larson!

Down time with the Rolleiflex – part 2

I have been in the process of casually photographing my friends during our quiet times together using my old Rolleiflex. For me, it has become a means of relaxation to embrace the slowed-down act of photographing with medium format film and eventually processing when a spare moment becomes available. I let go of the immediacy that I am usually so attached to and reflect on our moments together sometime after we have left one-another’s company. As I work on the photographs, I realize how much I care for my friends and how many complex emotions an image can still evoke in me.

Laser Cutting Sketches

I have been experimenting on the laser cutter over at the Architecture department lately. I may stink like a synthetic BBQ afterwards, but the results have been interesting and I am beginning to see where it might take my work conceptually. Here is one test that I was visually pretty happy with. I’m hoping to have more up online and in a few shows in the next month. Enjoy!

MAKE8ELIEVE Issue #1 – Dinosaurs!

I’m very excited to have 2 works included in the first issue of MAKE8ELIEVE, an online magazine, born of a collaboration between two artists, Michelle Marie Murphy (Ohio) and Baptiste Lefebvre (a.k.a. Cetusss) (Switzerland). There goal is to “build international connections by publishing creative interpretations of one topic per issue. We believe we can organize an intelligent, challenging, and well designed magazine with contemporary and unusual topics.”

So far I’m pretty into their topics and excited to see what else they come up with. Thanks for including me!
